Start
Race starts will be a deep-water, mass start. The ‘field of play’ is deemed to start from the moment competitors enter the water for each swim start and ends at the finish line.
Races will be set off 20 minutes apart. There will be approximately a 1 hour 20 minutes rest period between Race 1 and Race 2 and a 2 hour 20 minutes rest period between Race 2 and Race 3. Start times for each race are as below:
Race 1 | Race 2 | Race 3 | |
Youth A Girls | 08:30 | 09:50 | 12:10 |
Youth A Boys | 08:50 | 10:10 | 12:30 |
Youth B / Junior Girls | 09:10 | 10:30 | 12:50 |
Youth B / Junior Boys | 09:30 | 10:50 | 13:10 |
The swim course for all races takes place in the Loch. Please do not enter the water until directed to by marshals. You will enter the water from the beach, before swimming out to the start line. Please take your time getting into the water. You will be able to enter the water 5 minutes before the start of each race to allow you a short time to warm up and acclimatise. Athletes will be given a 1 minute then 30 seconds warning at the start line. An air horn will be sounded to indicate the start of each race.
Swim
For your safety, swim hats are compulsory for the swim section. We will provide you with a coloured swim hat which you must wear for all races. The water temperature is expected to be between 14-17 degrees, so please take your time getting into the water to allow you to acclimatise. Please note that wetsuits will be compulsory for water temperatures below 14 degrees Celsius, but it is recommended that athletes wear a wetsuit even if the temperature is above this level. Water safety marshals will be on the water. If you get into difficulty you should turn onto your back and put your hand in the air to attract attention.
The swim distance will vary each race and is the same for all age groups, as below:
Race 1 = 800m
Race 2 = 500m
Race 3 = 300m
Athletes will swim in an anti-clockwise direction. Buoys will be positioned at each corner to mark the course; you should keep these on your left at all times. The course is a rectangle shape of which you do various lengths of depending on the race.
Race 1 – 800m
Swim to the far away orange buoy (passing a red buoy on your left), turn left then left again at the second orange buoy. Turn left at the red buoy on your way back towards the beach, then left again at the second red buoy to re-join the ‘out’ leg of the course. This time continue straight on to the beach after passing both orange buoys. |
Race 2 – 500m
Swim to the far away orange buoy (passing a red buoy on your left), turn left then left again at the second orange buoy. Continue straight on to the beach, passing another red buoy on your left. |
Race 3 – 300m
Swim to the first red buoy, turn left then left again at the second red buoy. Continue straight on to exit at the beach. |
Once you have completed each swim you should exit the water at the opposite side of the beach and make your way towards transition. The swim exit will be marked by Triathlon Scotland flags.
Transition
Once you have completed your swim you should head towards transition where you will enter from the east side (closest to registration). Turn left to enter your designated transition area. Remove your wetsuit and put on any additional run kit over your swimwear. Please ensure you leave your wetsuit, goggles & hat neatly in your space to avoid it getting in the way of others.
Once you are ready to head out on the run you should continue along the direction of travel, heading out the other end of transition (nearest the café building), turning right to join the run route.
Run
The run route is a multi-lap loop on park paths and single-track surface through the woods. After exiting transition, athletes will run approximately 225m to join the lapped area of the course. From there, they will continue along the path until they reach the Y-junction, where they will initially take a right. They will continue along the path to the east turn point, where they will take a sharp left and follow the single-track path.
A turn point will be located on the path about 25m before the finish line – please turn here to complete additional laps or head straight on down the finish chute if on your last lap. Please keep right at all times whilst on the run course.
A water station will be positioned near the south turn point.
The event takes place in a public park, and we do not have sole use of the venue so please be aware of any members of the public that may be on the course. Marshals will be positioned along the route for your safety and direction, and to warn any members of the public.
Run distances for each race are as below:

Bottled water will be provided at the finish line. No other food or drink will be provided so it is important you bring any other sustenance you will need for the event. You should retain your timing chip until the end of the 3rd race. Please ensure you stay clear of timing mats between races, as it you could accidentally trigger the timing system. Following your final race, you should remove your timing chip and place in the buckets provided.
Scoring
Your Super Series points are calculated from your best 2 scores from the 3 races. The idea of having multiple races in one day is to give you the opportunity to try different things with a bit less pressure on if something doesn’t quite work out. It also allows you to gain experience of warming up for an event, doing it and then recovering for the next one, which is becoming increasingly relevant as more junior and senior races are moving a heats and finals format.
Points awarded for this event will correspond to finishing position within each of the 3 races, see example table below.
1St Place | 1pt |
2nd Place | 2pts |
3rd Place | 3pts |
4th Place | 4pts |
5th Place | 5pts |
Etc … |
The athlete with the lowest number of points from their best 2 of 3 races will be awarded the maximum number of super series points.
Overall Position | Athlete name | Race 1 Points | Race 2 Points | Race 3 Points | Total Points |
1st | Athlete A | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 |
2nd | Athlete B | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
3rd | Athlete C | 4 | 4 | 2 | 6 |
In the event of tied points across 2 races, athletes will be awarded the same overall position and Super Series points. The next placed athlete will be awarded the same overall position they would have achieved had there not been a tie. See example table below:
Overall | Athlete name | Race 1 | Race 2 | Race 3 | Total Points | Super Series Points |
1st | Athlete A | 1 | 2 | 5 | 3 | 2500 |
1st | Athlete B | 2 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 2500 |
3rd | Athlete C | 4 | 4 | 2 | 6 | 2141 |
4th | Athlete D | 3 | 6 | 8 | 9 | 1978 |
A few senior (20+) athletes have been invited to take part in the event, but will not be awarded any points as part of the Super Series. These athletes will be identified by a coloured race number.
Photography
Triathlon Scotland staff and our designated photographer will be taking photos and videos from the event. Parents/carers of all participants aged under 18 asked to provide photo/video consent as part of the entry process. Where consent has not been provided, athletes will be given an identifying wristband which must be worn. The first of the two aquathlon events in this year’s British Triathlon Super Series took place at Lochore Meadows in Scotland where youth and junior athletes showcased their swim and run skills.
For each athlete, the best two results from the three races on the day counted and were used to calculate the final event standings, making for an exciting day of racing with the final result not known until the points were calculated at the end of the final race.
With three wins out of three on the day for Rory Byrant, there was no doubt as to where the maximum Super Series points were heading in the Youth A Boys category.
The first race for the Youth A Boys was an 800m swim and 1km run with Bryant claiming his first victory of the day, passing George Turner who had led out of the swim, and holding off the challenge of the fast-running Brandon Pye, who finished second ahead of Turner.
The second race over a 500m swim and 1.5km run followed a similar pattern, with Turner again leading after the swim. Bryant however then took control of the run to secure the victory with another second-place finish for Pye.
In the third and final race, the athletes raced over a 300m swim and 2km run. Already having taken two wins out of two, Bryant had already secured the maximum British Super Series points but there was still a lot to play for further down the field.
The overall victory in the third was again went to Bryant with Mathys Bocquet finishing one second behind and Alex Boyer in third.
Pye’s two second places saw him end the day second in the event standings, with Luke Jolmes third overall following third and fourth place finishes.
In race one, the same distances of the Youth A Boys, Jessica Heeps had a 15 second lead out of the swim and managed to maintain this lead all the way to the finish line. Rebecca Van Aardt was second with Tabitha Robson in third.
In the second race the order was maintained with Heeps again leading out of the swim and holding on by 16 seconds. In race three, it was Van Aardt who was the stronger over the 2km run, with Helena Coy two seconds behind in second, and Heeps in 3rd.
Heeps took maximum British Super Series points, with Van Aardt in second and Robson in third.
In the combined Youth B and Junior Boys races, Youth B athlete Harry Courtney led out of the swim ahead of junior Callum Stedman. Courtney held on to begin his day with victory, with Stedman remaining in second over the first race of an 800m swim and 1km run.
Junior athlete Charlie Harding – who will represent England at the Commonwealth Games as Oscar Kelly’s guide in PTVI paratriathlon – came through the field to finish third having come out of the water in ninth.
Onto the second race, a 500m swim and 2km run, it was junior athlete Struan Bennet who exited first out of water and, despite Llanelli Youth B winner Deri McCluskey running through the field, it was Bennet who held on with Harding in third.
With three points covering the top five athletes, there was everything to play for going into the third and final race consisting of a 300m swim and 3km run.
Exiting the swim, only five seconds separated the top three and it was Bennet and Harding who got a gap on the rest of the field as they started the third lap on the run. Bennet made a final surge in the final 100m to secure the race win two seconds ahead of Harding in second and McCluskey in third.
Bennet claimed maximum points in the junior rankings ahead of Harding in second and Stedman in third. Courtney and McCluskey were both tied in first in the Youth B standings with Josh Geary third.
In the first race of the combined Youth B and Junior Girls races, junior Olivia Logan led out of the swim and held on by one second from a fast-chasing Millie Breese and newly-crowned world junior cross triathlon champion Isla Hedley.
Into the second race and a strong swim saw Hedley exit the water in the lead group and, with the fastest run, held off Breese in second and Eve Whitaker in third. As the run got longer Hedley was in control and the second and third from race two reversed with Whitaker ahead of Breese.
In the Youth B rankings standings, Hedley ended the day in first, Breese second and Whitaker in third. In the junior category, Annabel Wright was first, with Jess Sails in second and Anna McQueen third.
