Mallory Park plays host to Super Series sprint racing

19/07/2024

Youth B, Junior and Senior triathletes were all in sprint triathlon action at Mallory Park last weekend.

They all raced over a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run to claim vital Super Series ranking points. Open races were split into Tier 1 and Tier 2.

Here we look at who made the top three in each category.

Youth B

Anna Patterson biked her way to victory in the Female Youth B category with the fastest 20km ride of the race. She came out of the water in third with Lucy Jones setting the early pace. The pair swapped around on the bike course and Patterson put in the second fastest run time of the race to take the win. Behind her, Annabelle Souter recorded the fastest 5km of the race to take second place with Jones crossing the line in third.

The Open Youth B Tier 1 race was won by William Pridden. He exited the water with a 16 second advantage which he grew by a further 19 seconds across the bike leg. On the run, Maximus Murray put in the fastest time of the race to reduce the gap to Pridden by almost 30 seconds, but it was too late to change the result with Pridden crossing the line 11 seconds clear of Murray. Behind them, Arthur Ballard completed the podium.

It all came down to the run in the Open Youth B Tier 2 race. Caspar Cumberland put in consistent times across all three disciplines to take the win, crossing the line ahead of Iwan Froley after the pair had traded positions across all three legs. Aiden Colmer finished 18 seconds off the lead in third.

Junior

In the Female Junior race, Megan Hornung came from almost a minute down after the swim to take victory. The early pace was set by Isabella Gar, as she was the only triathlete to complete the swim in under 10 minutes.

On the bike leg, Gar lost ground though with Hornung and eventual runner up Katie Mathison taking 30 seconds out of her lead. The pair then overtook Gar on the run, with Hornung setting the fastest 5km time of the race to take the win. Mathison came over the line in second place as Gar finished 11 seconds back in third.

Oliver Conway picked up the win in the Open Junior Tier 1 race. He came out of the water 30 seconds off the early pace set by Alex Robin. The bike leg saw Conway take the lead and he stretched his advantage by another five seconds on the run to cross the line 17 seconds clear of Robin in second.

Behind them, Deri McCluskey and Christo Chilton were separated by just four seconds in their battle for third place, which was won by the former.

The Open Junior Tier 2 race saw Ben Hill lead from start to finish on his way to a 15 second win. He came out of the water with a 35 second advantage, which he stretched in T1. He lost ground on the bike leg as Sam Smyth closed in across the 20km course before running clear on the 5km to claim the win. Smyth crossed the line in second with Ralph Robson over a minute back in third.

Senior

Issy Hayes picked up the win in the Female Senior race as she ran her way through to take first place. Katie Rodda led the way across the swim and run legs with the quickest times across both disciplines. Hayes then recorded the second fastest run time of the race to take the lead, finishing 13 seconds clear of Rodda. Lara Atkinson was next across the line as she rounded off the podium.

The Open Senior Tier 1 race was won by Micheal Gar, who ran away from Joe Sherman to claim the win.

Gar started quickly with the fastest swim time, leading by almost 20 seconds heading into T1. Sherman closed the gap in T1 and on the bike leg he drew level with Gar as they started the run neck and neck. Over the course of the 5km final leg Gar pulled away to win by 11 seconds with Sherman finishing second. Third place went to Ben Cumberland.

James Hodgson was the only triathlete to finish under 00:58:00 as he won the Open Senior Tier 2 race. The swim leg saw him almost two minutes off early leader Eddie Jodrell.  Hodgson put in the quickest bike time to climb up the standings and put himself in contention for the podium. He followed it up with the quickest run time of the race to win by over a minute. Cameron Kerr was next over the line with Brett Baker finishing third.
