The Super Series met Supertri this weekend at Blenheim Palace, as the cream of British elite and development talent lined up alongside international stars for a draft-legal sprint distance race across the Blenheim Palace estate. As well as Super Series points at stake for the British athletes, there was also the opportunity to qualify for the Supertri Pro Series Final in Jersey with the chance to win a share of the $800,000 prize fund, the biggest one-day prize in triathlon.
In the overall open Supertri race, Oli Conway took the win after a hard fought race. He used the long run up the hill out of the swim to get in the front group on the bike, and after a fast ride that kept them all clear, it was a group of ten athletes that entered T2 at the end of the ride. Three athletes broke clear of the pack on the run, and it was Conway who outsprinted Charles Paquet of Canada and Australian Luke Willian to take the win.
Harry Leleu was the next British athlete to cross the line in fourth place, meaning he finished second in the Super Series race, with Fynn Batkin just behind to take the third spot on the Super Series podium.
In the women’s race, it was Belgian Jolien Vermeylen who took the win, finishing thirty seconds ahead of Léonie Périault of France. Olivia Mathias took the final place on the Supertri podium, and as first British athlete home, took the Super Series win. She finished just ahead of Jess Fullagar who took home the Super Series silver medal with Eve Whitaker picking up the final place in third.
With centrally contracted Supertri athletes automatically qualifying for the Pro Series Final in Jersey, this meant Eve Whitaker and Lottie James qualified alongside Mathias. Oli Conway’s win means he will also be racing in Jersey in September where the winner of both men’s and women’s races will take home $100,000.
After two rounds of the Super Series, Bethany Cook and Olivia Mathias sit at the top of the women’s rankings, while Michael Gar and Oliver Conway are joint first in the open series.
In two weeks’ time on 21 June, the Youth and Junior athletes will be racing in Lochore Meadows in Scotland, while the Paratri athletes will be competing at the Dambuster event at Rutland Water.
